LHEON

The LHEON project aimed to understand how Ports are evolving and how Earth Observation (EO) data can respond to their monitoring needs. LHEON is part of the market development study department at ESA, which aims to foster the development of operational environmental information services at a European and Global level.

LHEON’s main achievements have been:

  • A real user driven project: six ports are participating actively in the trials (highly practical and adapted to the reality of ports)
  • Ports no longer see satellite data as something solely for scientists
LHEON managed to present satellite in user forums and not in technology forums (typical of us, EO actors)
  • LHEON managed expectations in a sincere way. Satellite cannot solve all problems but it may in the future, so start to know it now!!!
  • Ports are starting to understand that the use of satellite data can bring them the opportunity to participate in the definition of future satellite missions
  • Raising awareness has been one of the key issues. Ports did not know what may be possible before…now they are talking about it to each other!!
  • Demonstrations have shown the practical applicability of EO data in real situations
