The project focussed on the development of practical tools to analyse the environmental priorities, to share experiences, to transfer best practices and to define implementation projects to apply cost-effective solutions in local situations. Double work can be avoided and ports save time and money. Moreover, ports will be able to give input on policy development and new regulations and thus work towards self-regulation in the field of environment.
With the ECO-information project, a dedicated environmental information-system has been developed for port authorities. The ECO-system has filled a vacuum that existed in the field of information systems for port environmental management. It has been launched during the project and tested in more than 50 ports throughout Europe. The ECO-system is constructed on:
- A diagnosis tool: Self-Diagnosis Method (SDM)
- An information engine: ECO-information Database
- A communication platform: ECO-website
