habitat management

Management of habitat is a major issue today facing port managers. The Birds and Habitats Directives have had a significant influence.

An important element of good practice management is the establishment of a Management Plan for sensitive areas. A very good example of such an initiative is shown below from Poole Harbour.

If you have an example of a good practice solution in this area that you would like to share, please contact the EcoPorts Foundation Secretariat (foundation@ecoports.com).

Aquatic Management Plan, Poole Harbour

Poole Harbour is one of the outstanding natural features of Southern England and one of the largest natural harbours in the world. The Harbour is of exceptional ecological value with, National, European and International nature conservation designations. It also supports significant commercial and recreational activities and the need to manage these different uses has long been recognised.

The 2006 Harbour Aquatic Management Plan provides a framework for the effective, co-ordinated management of the Harbour and the Poole Harbour Special Protection Area (SPA) and serves as a Management Scheme for the European Marine Site, as set out in Regulation 34 of The Conservation (Natural Habitats etc) regulations 1194. It also covers the present and future needs of conservation, recreation and commercial use and other legitimate interest of the Harbour.

Its overall aim is:
“To promote the safe and sustainable use of Poole Harbour, balancing the demands on its natural resources, minimising risk and resolving conflicts of interest.”
