1st ECOPORTS Conference
"Common challenges, Practical Solutions"
Barcelona, 23-24 October, 2003
The 1st ECOPORTS Conference took place on 23 & 24 October in Barcelona, Spain. The Conference was organised in the framework of ECOPORTS project, a three-year project (2002-2005) funded by the European Community, Directorate General ‘Energy & Transport’ under the ‘Competitive and Sustainable Growth; programme.
The main goals of the ECOPORTS Conference were to:
- Establish a network of ports and individuals that can exchange information and experience
- Establish the means of producing improved Environmental Management Systems and Tools which will help to analyze performance and compare across a European Benchmark
- Feed information into ESPO policy arena, in order to set even more ambitious targets for sustainable development
ESPO, in cooperation with ECOPORTS, has kept updated the list of the top-10 environmental issues for the European ports from 1996 until 2003. Based on this list, three case studies have already been formulated in the ECOPORTS project and the work has started on:
- Waste management
- The logistic chain and the environment
- Port-city relationship
In addition to these case studies, proposals for new projects of cooperation were presented in the Conference for the first time. These involve:
- Dredging
- Noise management
- Dust reduction
- Inland ports & the Environment
The following Parallel Sessions were organised:
Session 1: Waste recycling opportunities in the port area
Session 2: Logistic chain and the environment
Session 3: Port-city relationship
Session 4: Port development and habitats
