Renewal of PERS certification for the Port of Algeciras

13 May 2026

ESPO congratulates the Port of Algeciras (Spain) on achieving recertification under the EcoPorts environmental management standard (PERS). The Port of Dover has been an EcoPorts member since 2015 and is now been awarded the PERS certificate for the sixth time.

Isabelle Ryckbost, ESPO Secretary General, stated: “The Port of Algeciaras has a continuous commitment to engage into sustainability as is proven by this sixth recertification. Sustainability is really a common thread throughout their operations. Moreover, the port has an excellent track record as regards operational efficiency, looking at the time vessels spend in the port, which as well delivers in terms of  emission and nuisance reductions. I wish to congratulate the port and port stakeholders for their efforts. Congratulations!”

Tim Verhoeven, ESPO Senior Policy Advisor and EcoPorts Coordinator, indicated: “Congratulations to the Port of Algeciras on the successful renewal of your PERS certification a testament to your leadership and your commitment to electrification and sustainable port operations. A truly forward‑looking achievement.“

PERS (Port Environmental Review System) is the only port-specific environmental standard. The last five years have seen important increases in its recognition and membership, with 82 ports from 23 countries currently counting themselves as part of the EcoPorts Network, and 25 ports holding PERS certification. Compliance with the EcoPorts’ PERS standard is independently assessed by LRQA Nederland B.V. and the certificate has a validity of two years. EcoPorts’ PERS is revised after the 2-year period, ensuring ports continuously meet the requirements.
